Nuuk, Greenland

We docked at Nuuk harbour at 8.30 this morning - took a while to get the gangway organised, the carpenter had to make some alterations and so the tours got off to a late start. And because of the rain and windy weather the cultural show which was to have been held at the dock was cancelled.  Our bus  and guide took us on a 1 1/2 hour drive all around Nuuk, past all the colourful houses and landmarks, airport, town centre etc.   Nuuk has a population of 15,000 and is the capital of Greenland.  

We stopped by the Mall on the way back to the ship, nothing much to buy unless interested in fabulous seal skin products.  The boots, bags, jackets etc were so beautiful but would be too heavy and hot to rock up to the MCG in!

We wandered through the supermarket which is always interesting in these remote places and the freezer section was full of fish products including whale, seal and of course lamb but not sure from where that was sourced.  Wine was readily available and from all around the world including Australia but you’d need a big income to afford it.  In fact everything is very expensive - just along from the supermarket there was a dine in/take out place called ‘Bones’.  An American style place that sold ribs, burgers etc and the cost of a burger was Aus $28. Came back to the ship for lunch and I stayed here, ended up having a nice 4 hour sleep!  G went out again to see the museum. 

After dinner entertainment tonight was performed by Pasha who is the orchestra pianist. He played Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Debussy, very enjoyable 

Since leaving Nuuk the seas have become quite rough and looks like we’re in for a fun night.  We are sailing towards another town in Greenland, Paamiut, but it’s doubtful we’ll be able to tender so could miss it completely.
