Martha’s Vineyard to Boston

Last night the Captain’s cocktail party was held in the theatre at 5.45 pm.  All key personnel were introduced by Ray (Cruise Director) then a variety show followed.  Ray opened with an absolutely beautiful rendition of ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ - he’s in his late 70’s and as sharp as a tack!!!  Several ABBA songs were then performed by the singers and dancers and to finish we had a comedian who, oddly enough, made me laugh!!! Most comedians on ships are boring but this guy was amazing. The reason for the early show was so that we could be up on deck for our transit through the Cape Cod Canal around 10pm.  Well, I’ve never heard of this Canal but it was built in 1914 and is actually the inner coastal route which reduced the distance from Boston to New York by 64 Miles! It opened as a privately operated waterway to connect Cape Cod Bay in the north to  Buzzards Bay in  the South.

Each year hundreds of thousands of people cross over the Cape Cod Canal using one of the three bridges. The Sagamore, Bourne, and Railroad bridges have been a staple of daily life for Cape Codders and visitors alike for decades. It shortened the distance needed to bypass the Cape immensely. However the peninsula known as Cape Cod once the canal had been completed become a manmade island. 

Both sides of the Canal are famous for holidaymakers and as we passed through there were people waving and shouting to us from caravan and amusement parks. Being 10.30 at night meant we really couldn’t see much but it was interesting.
