Bar Harbour, Maine

Bar Harbour is such a beautiful place, very easy to understand why so many important, wealthy Americans built holiday homes here years and years ago.  The first bridge from the mainland town of Trenton to Mt Desert Island was built in 1837 and a new bridge was then built in 1917.  But it was years before cars were allowed on the island, roads were for carriages only.  This region is very mountainous, our tour took us to the top of Cadillac Mountain- fabulous panoramic views of the area.  This is also where the first sunrise can be seen from early October through to March.  Acadia National Park is a National treasure and the second most visited National Park in the U.S. Also it’s the first national park created east of the Mississippi River. After several name changes, the park officially became Acadia in 1929.

Bar Harbour and the island are indebted to the generosity of the Rockefeller family who donated over 1,000 acres of land adjacent to Acadia National Park for land and garden preservation.  

Back in the lovely town, which was very crowded since 2 ships are in port, we bought some lunch ( a lobster roll of course) and sat in the sunshine to enjoy.  

Enjoyed dinner with our friends Joy & Ken and afterwards a fairly ordinary show in the theatre.  An old crooner singing songs from shows he’s starred in - no doubt famous in another era!!!
